FAQs

  • Think of it like blending a smoothie. Take each player’s individual rating, toss them into the hypothetical blender (aka the formula), and find the average. That’s your team’s starting rating. Win a match? That number goes up based on the opponent’s rating. Lose? Well, gravity applies to ratings too.

  • Originally used for chess, the ELO rating system calculates the odds of victory by comparing your rating to your opponent’s. It then adjusts your rating based on who actually wins. Beat a slightly stronger opponent? Tiny bump. Upset a highly-rated team? You’ll ride a bigger wave. Lose to underdogs? Your rating might slide faster than a missed return.

  • Not at all. Pairing up a 3.0 and a 4.0 player can balance out strengths and weaknesses. The lower rated player will affect the overall team rating and likely be the go-to target of the opposing team. Just make sure the higher rated player is great at poaching.

  • Yes, but only if the team loses to lower-rated opponents. ELO algorithm loves an underdog story, so if your high rating is on a losing side, it’ll take a hit proportional to the “humility lesson” handed by the other team. Choose wisely and bring your A-game, regardless of your partner’s level.

  • Yes! Ratings in pickleball are dynamic, and your doubles rating evolves based on team performance. If you consistently win with Partner A but struggle with Partner B, don’t be surprised if your rating looks a little higher (or lower) depending on who’s by your side.

  • Apps, clubs, and open-play games are your matchmaking ticket. Many leagues and apps allow you to filter by ratings, ensuring you don’t get catfished. Alternatively, scout out your local courts and ask a prospective partner post-match.
